Dvar for Mot-Kedoshim
by Shlomo Ressler

Parshat Kedoshim begins with G-d telling the Jews that we should be holy, because G-d is holy (19:1). Rashi and the Midrash expand on the term “holy” to mean refraining from sinning, especially sins involving improper relations.. But why would keeping that commandment specifically make us any holier than any other commandment we keep?

THE WEEKLY TORAH READING-A FIRST GLANCE
ACHAREI MOS and K'DOSHIM, LEVITICUS 16:1-18:30 and 19:1-20:27
A short study of the reading by Yaakov Fogelman

REBELLIOUS REACTIONS
This portion's 2 major themes, the elaborate Yom Kippur sacrificial service and a list of forbidden sexual acts, set Jews sharply apart from pagan Egypt & Canaan (and USA Today?); they have been our Yom Kippur Torah readings for thousands of years. U.S. Reform liturgy eliminates all traditional Yom Kippur Torah readings- it just repeats "nice" Rosh Hashana readings about repentance, more P.C., per western liberal religious notions. Perhaps as a result of ignoring these readings, they have recently given their rabbis license to sanctify forbidden and condemned homosexual and interfaith relationships, leading their flock even further away from true Judaism. On closer examination, however, both traditional Yom Kippur realms are most relevant today, teaching important messages. Freud indeed showed how incest sublimation is the basis of all civilization.

Aharei Mot - Kedoshim
Leviticus 16:1 - 20:27
This week's commentary was written by Rabbi Joshua Heller, director of distance learning and educational technology at JTS.

Sometimes in the Biblical text, the first half and second half of a verse seem to be talking past each other. The first half addresses one commandment or concept, and the second half seems to go off on a tangent. This strange type of juxtaposition appears a number of times in Kedoshim, the second half of our double portion for the week.
