Fiddler on the Roof

Edition Details:
Color, Closed-captioned, Dolby, NTSC
Number of tapes: 2

This rousing musical, based on the stories of Shalom Aleichem, takes place in pre-revolutionary Russia and centers on the life of Tevye (Topol), a milkman who is trying to keep his family's traditions in place while marrying off his three older daughters. Yet, times are changing and the daughters want to make their own matches, breaking free of many of the constricting customs required of them by Judaism. In the background of these events, Russia is on the brink of revolution and Jews are feeling increasingly unwelcome in their villages. Tevye--who expresses his desire for sameness in the opening number, "Tradition"--is trying to keep everyone, and everything, together. The movie is strongly allegorical--Tevye represents the common man--but it does it dexterously, and the resulting film is a stunning work of art. The music is excellent (it won Oscars for the scoring and the sound), with plenty of familiar songs such as "Sunrise, Sunset" and "If I Were a Rich Man," which you'll be humming long after the movie is over. Isaac Stern's violin--he provides the music for the fiddler on the roof--is hauntingly beautiful. And despite the serious subject matter, the film is quite comedic in parts; it also well deserves the Oscar it won for cinematography. --Jenny Brown

A Taste of Passover (2000)

Edition Details:
NTSC format (US and Canada only)
Color, Closed-captioned, NTSC
ASIN: B00000IO03

The Passover Seder is an occasion for Jews to rejoice, to celebrate their triumphs in Egypt, to commemorate those who are not with us, and of course to eat beyond satiation while singing the songs of the season. PBS's A Taste of Passover is an incredible hourlong celebration of the music of the holiday, hosted by Theodore Bikel. Presented in the Jordan Hall of the New England Conservatory with a gospel choir, a klezmer band, and a children's chorus, Bikel shares songs both ancient and modern: "Der Bekher," in which a toast is drunk to everyone, including enemies (although, Bikel points out, we don't need to tell them that); "Seder Plate Round," a story about the symbols on the table, sung by the New England Conservatory's Children's Chorus; several versions of "Dayenu"; the rousing good cheer of "Chad Gadya"; and many, many more. Songs in Ladino, Yiddish, and Hebrew are presented with English subtitles, so the meanings of long-familiar pieces are finally understood. In addition to the beautiful music, Chasia Segal demonstrates how to make perfect matzo balls and Bikel shares his many Passover memories. This is a lovely video to watch as you prepare your Seder feast and to share with your family in celebration of this joyous holiday. --Jenny Brown
